Every Wrong Turn

It begins with a simple problem: the time machine has no instruction manual.

An accidental traveler lands in a fictional 1940s Shanghai ballroom, an unnamed 1973 New York dance floor in the city's early disco years, an unnamed black-and-white Malay-language film set, neon Tokyo, golden-era Phnom Penh, rain-soaked Seattle, and a future where every mistake has supposedly been corrected. There is no mission and no chosen destination — only another wrong year, another unfamiliar room, and music already playing when they arrive.

At first, the journey is pure disorientation. The traveler does not know the language, the steps, or the script, so they accept help and listen. Tokyo becomes the first place they cannot bear to leave. Phnom Penh shows that a new connection can follow a painful goodbye. Seattle teaches them that sadness does not always need to be fixed. The flawless future then reveals how empty life feels when all of that friction has been removed.

In the final stop, the device overloads and glitches. Instead of producing another clean landing, it pulls every remembered era into the same moment. Sounds that should not belong together collide, struggle, and eventually find a shared pulse without losing where they came from.

Every Wrong Turn is a fictional journey shaped by music across time and place — and by the discoveries that only happen when the route fails. The traveler never claims one place as theirs. Every sincere encounter changes how they listen.

始まりは、単純な問題だった。タイムマシンに取扱説明書がない。

旅人が着地するのは、1940年代の上海を舞台にした架空のダンスホール、1973年ニューヨークの名もないダンスフロア、白黒のマレー語映画の撮影現場、ネオンに包まれた東京、黄金時代のプノンペン、雨に濡れたシアトル、そして、すべての間違いが修正されたはずの未来。使命も、選んだ目的地もない。また違う年、また知らない部屋、そして到着する前から流れていた音楽だけがある。

旅の初めは、ただ混乱の連続だ。言葉もステップも台本も分からない旅人は、差し出された助けを受け取り、まず耳を澄ます。東京は初めて離れたくない場所になる。プノンペンでは、別れの痛みのあとにも新しいつながりが生まれると知る。シアトルでは、悲しみはいつも直す必要がないと学ぶ。そして完璧な未来は、摩擦のすべてを消した人生がどれほど空虚かを見せる。

最後にタイムマシンが過負荷を起こし、グリッチする。次の時代へきれいに着地する代わりに、それまでの記憶が同じ瞬間へ流れ込む。本来なら交わらない音が衝突し、せめぎ合い、やがて、どこから来たのかを失わないまま共通の拍を見つけていく。

『すべての遠回り』は、道を間違えたときにしか出会えないものを描く架空の旅だ。旅人は、どの場所も自分のものだとは言わない。もっと穏やかな答えにたどり着く。心から耳を澄ませた出会いは、そのたびに旅人を変えていた。
