All Green Up Here

The team brings eight to twelve weeks and the conditions that make the estimate possible. Upstairs, there is room for one number. By the time the manager returns, eight weeks has become a promise and the conditions have disappeared.

All Green Up Here follows one middle manager through four increasingly polished updates. Make the Number removes the uncertainty. Keep It Green removes the request for help. Executive Summary removes the decision. Why Wasn't I Told? opens the record and finds every warning beside the manager's own edits.

The manager understands the work and wants to protect the team from another round of scrutiny. Each cleaner report seems to buy them breathing room. It also leaves the people upstairs with less reason to change the date, reduce the scope, or make the decision the team needs. Pressure travels downward as certainty; truth travels upward as reassurance.

When the failure arrives, the first response is almost another message passed down: why did nobody warn me? Then the manager reads the history. The warnings were specific. The consequences were named. The requests reached their screen.

The final update keeps the status red and leaves the required decision in. Before it is sent, a message arrives from above: “Can you make this green before the call?” The cursor rests over Send.

All Green Up Hereは、ひとりの中間管理職と、回を重ねるごとに整っていく4つの報告を追う。Make the Numberで不確実性が消える。Keep It Greenで支援の依頼が消える。Executive Summaryで必要な判断が消える。Why Wasn't I Told?で記録を開くと、すべての警告の隣に、自分が加えた修正が残っている。

管理職は仕事の中身を理解し、チームがまた細かく問いただされるのを避けたいと思っている。報告を整えるたびに、少し息をつく余裕を作れた気がする。その一方で、上の階には、期日を変え、作業範囲を減らし、チームが必要とする判断を下す理由が届かなくなる。プレッシャーは確定事項として下へ流れ、真実は安心できる報告となって上へ流れる。

問題が現実になったとき、最初に浮かぶのは、また下へ送ってしまいそうな問いだった。なぜ誰も警告しなかったのか。そこで管理職は履歴を読む。警告は具体的だった。何が起きるかも書かれていた。依頼は、自分の画面まで届いていた。

最後の報告では、ステータスを赤のままにし、必要な判断も残す。送信する前に、上からメッセージが届く。「会議の前に、これをグリーンにできる？」カーソルは「送信」の上に止まっている。
