Acqua Alta

With water rising through Venice, rubber boots, a familiar bacaro, and one undisturbed spritz turn inconvenience into practiced ease.

Behind the Track

The tide app reads one-twenty-five. Rubber boots and a yellow raincoat are already waiting by the door, so she steps outside to see what kind of Venice the water has made today.

Tourists balance along raised walkways while a nonna carries her groceries through the flood without ceremony. At the familiar bacaro, they already know her order. The water rises, the bells disagree with one another, and the spritz remains undisturbed.

For her, sprezzatura is not pretending that difficulty does not exist. It is the practiced ease of refusing to let difficulty possess the whole afternoon. The water keeps rising. The wine is still poured.

Then sunlight breaks through the clouds and turns the flooded streets gold. She wades home laughing, dress wet and heart light. The city has not stopped sinking, but she has stopped running.

彼女にとってのsprezzatura(スプレッツァトゥーラ)は、困難など存在しないふりをすることではない。

Lyrics

Stivali by the door, già pronti
The tide app says one-twenty-five
Rubber boots and a yellow raincoat
Allora — let's see what the day's like
Pigeons huddle under the portico
Even they've stopped pretending it's fine
La signora at the bacaro waves
"Ciao bella, vino at five?"
Splash... splash... splash...

Le campane suonano insieme
A hundred bells, none of them in time
Eh — what's another ten centimeters
This city has been sinking all its life

Sprezzatura — the art of not trying
While the city forgets how to float
Sprezzatura — soaked to the ankles
With a spritz still warm in my hand
Ma dai, ma dai, ma dai
The water rises, the wine gets poured
Acqua alta, acqua alta
And nobody runs anymore

Mezzogiorno, the calle is shining
Tourists tiptoe on the passerelle
A nonna walks past in her galoshes
Carrying groceries — boh, oh well
The bacaro smells like rosemary
The radio plays something slow
Magari it stops by aperitivo
Magari it doesn't — chi lo sa
Tic tac... tic tac... tic tac...

Un cicchetto, un piccolo bacio
The barman hands me without a word
Eh — the water's reached the second step
But the spritz has not been disturbed

Sprezzatura — the art of not trying
While the city forgets how to float
Sprezzatura — soaked to the ankles
With a spritz still warm in my hand
Ma dai, ma dai, ma dai
The water rises, the wine gets poured
Acqua alta, acqua alta
And nobody runs anymore

The city does not fight the sea
It dances with it, slowly
Una città che galleggia
A city that floats, almost
Sprezzatura...
Ecco — the sun, ecco the gold...

Sprezzatura — the art of not trying
While the sun cracks open the cloud
Sprezzatura — wading home laughing
With my dress wet and my heart proud
Ma dai, ma dai, ma dai
The water falling, the bells still loud
Acqua alta, acqua alta
And I'm not running, not now

Ciao bella... a domani...
Sprezzatura...
(Splash... splash...)
