The deadline is fixed, every team is named, and every face in the meeting gives the expected nod. The one field nobody completes is the owner.
All Hands, No Owner begins where distribution is mistaken for delegation. People hold different pieces of the work, but nobody has both the mandate and accountability to make the decision it needs. Visibility is high; authority is low.
When the composite employee asks one practical question, the silence starts assigning the task back to them. They are asking for clarity, not volunteering to own the work, but the file has already begun moving toward the hand that was raised.
締め切りは確定し、関係するチームはすべて名指しされ、会議の全員がお決まりのようにうなずく。それでも、誰も埋めない欄がひとつだけある。担当者欄だ。
『All Hands, No Owner』は、全員に回すことを、誰かに任せることだと取り違えたところから始まる。仕事の一部はそれぞれの手にあるが、必要な判断を下す権限と、その結果を引き受ける責任を併せ持つ人はいない。周知は行き届いている一方で、権限は乏しい。
複数の社員像を重ねた語り手が、ひとつの現実的な質問を投げると、沈黙がその仕事を質問者へ割り当て始める。求めたのは明確な答えであって、担当者役を買って出たわけではない。それでもファイルはすでに、上がったその手へと滑り始めている。
