The Thing in the Fridge
A late-night snack turns into a visit to a sealed crypt behind the milk. The narrator lifts the lid, meets the problem, and politely leaves it for tomorrow.

Behind the Track
At one in the morning, the fridge light is the only light on. Behind the milk sits a container whose label has faded and whose lid has started to swell. The narrator cannot remember the meal or the day it came from.
A chopstick becomes an explorer’s tool. Fuzz builds a city, sauce turns to amber, and an old dinner acquires a will of its own. Every warning brings the hand closer to the lid.
When the lid finally lifts, the encounter ends in a quiet agreement. The narrator closes the door and orders food. The imagined creature keeps its dignity. The forgotten container keeps its shelf.
Lyrics
(don't go in) One in the morning, just the fridge light on I'm only here for snacks, I don't mean any harm (close the door) Second shelf from the bottom, tucked behind the milk A foil-wrapped little coffin, smooth as funeral silk I don't recall the meal, I don't recall the day The label's worn to nothing, the lid has domed away I lean in close to listen, I swear I hear it breathe A dinner that has died but does not want to leave My stomach says I'm hungry, my spirit says beware There's something old and patient growing quietly in there (don't lift the lid) There's a thing in the fridge and it's older than me Sealed in a tomb of cheap Tupperware mystery (don't lift the lid) I came down for a snack, I have opened up a crypt Something holy, something rotten, in the cold forgotten drip (back away now) I poke it with a chopstick, the surface gives a sigh A continent of fuzz has built a city on the rye The sauce has turned to amber, the rice has turned to stone This isn't last week's dinner — this thing has grown its own I should have thrown it Tuesday, I should have thrown it Lent But every time I open up, I lose my whole intent There's a thing in the fridge and it's older than me Sealed in a tomb of cheap Tupperware mystery (don't lift the lid) I came down for a snack, I have opened up a crypt Something holy, something rotten, in the cold forgotten drip (back away now) I count it down from three, I hold my breath, I lift It looked at me, I looked at it, we came to understand Some leftovers were never meant to leave the promised land There's a thing in the fridge and it's older than me I closed the door politely, let it keep its dignity (let it rest) I came down for a snack, I'm ordering instead Some things you do not bury — you leave them where they're fed (close the door) (close the door) One in the morning, and the fridge light dims I'll deal with it tomorrow or whenever courage swims (don't go in)
