Late Notice

The notice arrived late. Not a specific notice—just the general kind that shows up when a forty-something man looks up from his desk and wonders whether something was due years ago.

Late Notice opens four envelopes. Where Did It Go audits the missing years. Corner Office Blues asks what happens when the title finally arrives but the feeling does not. Read Receipts finds an old almost-love still waiting in the drafts. Dust, lol takes the largest question of all and answers it with the smallest possible laugh.

Four Chinese phrases mark the route: 光阴似箭, time flying like an arrow; 功名如梦, achievement becoming dreamlike; 情深缘浅, deep feeling with too little fate; and 万事皆空, everything eventually passing out of our hands. They are not presented as one ancient quotation. Here, they are four handles the narrator uses to open his own overdue mail.

我挺好的 appears throughout. At first it means do not inspect this too closely. At work it becomes corporate reflex. In love it fails completely. By the final track, he stops demanding that the phrase settle the argument and simply laughs.

This is not a resignation letter or a midlife solution. It is an audit carried out with dry humor, old memories, office jargon, and the growing suspicion that being late is not the same as being finished.

Its companion EP, Four Days, watches another narrator find meaning inside a handful of ordinary days. Late Notice asks the same small phrase to survive a much longer view.

知らせが届いたのは、ずいぶん遅かった。何か特定の知らせではない。40代の男が机からふと顔を上げ、何年も前に期限を迎えていた何かがあったのではないかと気づいたときに届く、あの種類の知らせだ。

『Late Notice』は、四通の封筒を開く。『Where Did It Go』は、消えた年月を棚卸しする。『Corner Office Blues』は、肩書きがようやく手に入ったのに、そこにあるはずだった実感がなかったらどうするのかと問う。『Read Receipts』は、昔の「もう少しで恋だったもの」が、今も下書きの中で待っていることに気づく。『Dust, lol』は、最も大きな問いに、最も小さな笑いで答える。

道しるべになるのは、四つの中国語だ。光阴似箭――時は矢のように過ぎる。功名如梦――地位も名誉も夢のよう。情深缘浅――想いは深く、縁は浅い。そして万事皆空――あらゆるものは移ろい、やがて手を離れる。これらを、ひと続きの古い引用として並べているわけではない。ここでは、語り手が自分宛ての遅すぎた知らせを開くための、四つの取っ手になっている。

我挺好的――「大丈夫だ」は、EPを通して何度も現れる。最初は「これ以上、詳しく見ないでくれ」という意味になる。仕事では職場で染みついた返事になる。恋の前では完全に役目を失う。最後には、そのひと言ですべてに決着をつけようとするのをやめ、ただ笑う。

これは退職届でも、中年期のための解決策でもない。乾いたユーモア、古い記憶、会社用語、そして「遅れたことと、もう終わったことは同じではない」という疑いを少しずつ深めながら進む、人生の棚卸しだ。

対になるEP『Four Days』では、別の語り手が、ほんの数日のありふれた時間の中に意味を見つけていく。『Late Notice』は、同じ短い言葉が、何十年という時間の中でも生き残れるのかを問う。
